  • Notes
    • Early Life
Mary Whichcote was born on the 27th of July 1640; her baptismal record (4th August 1640) at St Helen Bishopsgate notes her mother as "Katherine" and her father's profession is given as "Merchant". Her parents were Col. Christopher Whichcote, sometime Governor of Windsor Castle, and his wife Katherine ___.

      Family Life
Mary married the Rev. John Worthington (Rector of Fen Ditton) on the 13th of October 1657.

      Whichcote Surname
The family was originally from Whichcote in Shropshire, so the surname is a toponym (originally de Whichcote). They then transferred to Harpswell in Lincolnshire (probably with the generation of John Whichcote who married Elizabeth Tyrwhit, coheir of Sir John Tyrwhit of Harpswell), which remained the principal seat of the family for many hundreds of years. That being said, the Whichcotes in my tree were a cadet branch and moved back and forth between London and Stoke (in Shropshire).
