Early Life
It's a little bit confusing figuring out Elizabeth's parentage:
- FMG's Cressy pedigree1 has her the daughter of Thomas Portington and the widow of Nicholas Mauleverer
- Ducatus's Portington pedigree2 her as the daughter of John Portington and Cecily Copley, daughter of Thomas Copley Esq; and the wife of Robert Maulever of Letwell
- Dugdale's Portington pedigree3 has her as the daughter of John Portington and Mary Copley, daughter of John Copley of Batley
- Dugdale's Copley of Batley pedigree4 suggests first that Mary Copley was the daughter of John Copley of Batley and Agnes Pigot (daughter of Sir Geoffrey Pigot) and second that Mary Copley married either John or Thomas Portington
- Dugdale's Cressy of Birkin pedigree5 has her as the daughter of Thomas Portington of Barnby Don and the widow of Nicholas Mauleverer of Letwell who died in 1533
- Foster's Portington pedigree6 has her as the daughter of John Portington of Barnby and Cecily Copley, daughter of Thomas Copley and Agnes Pigott, and as the wife of Robert Mauleverer of Letwell
- Hunter's Mauleverer of Letwell pedigree7 has her as the wife of Robert Mauleverer of Letwell and daughter of John Portington of Barnby on the Don. Her son is given as Nicholas
So in conclusion, what can we say?
a) She was the daughter of John or Thomas Portington of Barnby Don, and Mary or Cecily Copley.
b) She was the wife first of Robert (or, less likely, Nicholas) Mauleverer of Letwell, and secondly of Hugh Cressy of Letwell
Her mother, Mary or Cecily Copley, was the daughter in turn of John (or less likely, Thomas) Copley of Batley, and Agnes Pigot (the daughter of Sir Geoffrey Pigot)
