succeeded his predecessor and namesake, the 2nd Lord, but there is no evidence to prove the precise relationship between the two of them although he is generally supposed to have been a nephew, and son of Alexander, second son of James, 1st Lord Livingston. Whatever the relationship was, if not that, he was certainly heir male and his succession was uncontested by other near members of the family.
