  • Notes
    • Early Life
      From Burke's1:
Derived in the male line from ancestors established in high repute in the palatinate of Lancaster, from the time of the Plantagenets, the Worthingtons ... represent branches of many of the most distinguished families in the north of England, including Norreys of Speke, the parent stock of the Earls of Abingdon; Molyneux of Crosby, a scion of the noble house of Sefton; Villiers of Crosby, a senior branch of the ducal stem of Buckingham, and the baronial line of Harrington....

In the Hundred of Leyland, Parish of Standish, and Palatinate of Lancaster is situated the manor of Worthington, which, at an early period, gave name to a family seated in the direct line, as well as in its various branches, for centuries in the same locality, maintaining a distinguished position amongst the chief Lancashire proprietors, and allying with its most eminent houses. The main stock established at Worthington is recorded in the herald's visitations, and can be traced through the public archives as far back as the time of HENRY III.
