TCP1WILLIAM (DE WARENNE), EARL OF SURREY or EARL WARENNE, 1st s. and h., b. probably about 1118, suv. his father 11 May 1138, and was knighted before 2 Feb. 1141, being then in command in the army of King Stephen at Lincoln, to whose defeat hia flight from the battle greatly contributed. He was in the crusade, under Louis VII. of France, but d. s,p.m. being slain by the Turks in the defiles of Laodicea, 19 Jan. 1147/8. He had m. before 1143, Ela, da. of William, called Talvas, COUNT OF ALENCON AND PONTHIEU, by Ela, da, of Odo, DUKE OF BURGUNDY. She m., as his second wife, Patrick (DE SALISBURY). 1st EARL OF SALISBURY (slain 27 March 1167/8), and d., his widow 4 or 10 Dec. 1174. On his death the Earldom may be considered to have devolved on his da. and h., or (as more probably was the case) to have reverted to the Crown.
