  • Notes
    • Early Life
Thomas Gipps was the son of Thomas Gipps of Bury St Edmunds1 and Frances ___ (Horseman?). He was likely born around 1570, given that his wife was born in 1572. We can find the baptism for a Thomas Gypps of Little Wheltnetham in Suffolk for May 1561. See the entry for Thomas' father for discussion around Wheltnetham and possible origins of the family. If Thomas was born this early, then he would have been 91 when he died which seems rather too old. A birth around the early 1570s seems more likely.

      Career
Thomas was a member of the Clothworker's Company in London (he was admitted 1608, see Hasted2). This career is consistent with that of the person that I'm fairly sure is his father (Thomas Gippes of Bury St Edmunds was a mercer). There's some evidence that Thomas had, or achieved, relatively high status as his daughter Sarah married directly into the influential Bunce family and his son Roger married the daughter of Sir William Brockman and Anne Bunce.

      Family Life
Thomas married Mary Sherwood, daughter of Richard Sherwood of Ludlow in Shropshire on the 22nd of October 1599 at St Mary Aldermanbury in London. It's not clear how Mary came to be married so far away from her home town; perhaps her father was also in the cloth business and had moved to London.

Thomas and Mary had two sons and a daughter:

      1. Roger of Newington in Kent, who married Helen Brockman
      2. Thomas
      3. Sarah, who married James Bunce of London3

I've not found any baptismal records for the children, but they are listed in the Visitation of London1 and confirmed by Thomas' will (see below).

The Visitation of London is signed by Thomas, so we can have some confidence in the name of his wife (Mary Sherwood) and father (Thomas Gipps of Bury St Edmunds).

      Death
Thomas died c. 1650. His will, written 21st July 1649, mentions:
      1. Eldest son Roger Gipps and his wife Helen
        1. William Gipps, the eldest son of Roger and Helen
        2. Thomas Gipps, the younger son of Roger and Helen

      2. Younger son Thomas Gipps
        1. Richard, son of Thomas Gipps
        2. Thomas, son of Thomas Gipps

      3. Daughter Sarah Bunce (she who married Sir James Bunce, Alderman of London)
        • Thomas Bunce, son of Sarah

      4. His brother-in-law Matthew Alexander (Matthew was married - in 1605 - to Katherine Sherwood, the sister of Thomas' wife Mary)
      5. William and Richard Sherwood (probably other brothers-in-law)
      6. His sister Elizabeth Rockett (may have married Thomas Rockett of Bury St Edmunds, though if so that was a second marriage as she is named as the spouse of Thomas Bendo in her father's will)

[3] Note that the Gipps and Bunce family were intertwined at least twice. Firsly through Sarah who married James Bunce of London, but secondly through Sarah's brother Roger: Roger married Helen Brockman, who was the daughter of Anne Bunce. Anne Bunce would have been the aunt of James Bunce of London and so this latter James was a first cousin of the Helen Brockman who married Roger.
