Early Life
Simon Gipps was the son of
Roger Gipps of
Newington, and
Helen Brockman. He was born in April 1648 and baptised on the 23
rd of April that year at
Newington next Hythe in Kent.
Career
On his first marriage Simon is described as a physician, at his second as a "chirurgeon", i.e. surgeon or physician. The
Kent Archaeological Society issued a paper on Kent apothecaries which mentions Simon:
On April 14 1672, Simon Gipps, bachelor c. 24, physician of Sittingbourne, was granted a licence to marry Elizabeth Goulding and on February 1, 1675/6 Simon Gipps, widower of Charing, surgeon, to marry Ann Landman of Deal. In 1680, Simon Gipps, surgeon, husband of Ann, daughter of Henry Landman, innholder, was admitted as a freeman of Canterbury marriage.
Family Life
Simon Gipps married first Elizabeth Golding/Goulding on the 14
th of April 1672 at
St Mary Bredin, Canterbury; she evidently died shortly after so Simon married second
Anne Landman on the 1
st of February 1676 at
Hackington in Kent; together they had:
- Anne, bapt. 12 Nov 1676 but who died in 1677
- Sarah, bapt. 13 Dec 1677
- Ellen, bapt. 1 Aug 1679
- Henry, bapt. 1681 and who married Sarah Flint
- Anne, bapt. 1683
- Elizabeth, bapt. 1689
Simon is described as "Gentleman" in some of these baptismal records.
Death
Simon died in 1690, aged just 42, and was buried on the 16
th of August at
St Peter & St Paul, Charing in Kent. His will is available at
Canterbury, ref PRC/27/32/134, but is unfortunately not online. Access to that will would help establish if he truly was the father of
Henry Gipps of Canterbury, as I believe.
Footnotes
[1] Note that Simon's baptismal record is not properly keyed in the indices, so hard to find. It is on the same page as his sister Margery's baptism in 1650, and his brother George's baptism in 1646.
