Early Life
Ralph Midgley was the son of
Robert Midgeley of
Breare and
Isobel Smith. He was born in 1621/22 and baptised on the 18
th of February. In
Ducatus Leodidensis1 Ralph is denoted 'of Breragh'. It would seem (e.g. see
midgleywebpages) that Breragh was Breary Hall near Bramhope
Family Life
Ralph married
Frances Burnistone, probably in about 1657 as their first child,
Ruth, was born in 1658. I have identified five children:
- Ruth, b. 1658
- James, b. 1661
- Rosamond, b. 1663
- Isabell, b. 1665 but who died in 1667
- Esther, b. 1669 and who married Francis Lupton
Death
Ralph was buried at
St John the Baptist in Adel, a suburb of Leeds. His headstone reads:
Here interred is the body of RALPH MIDGLEY of West Breare who departed this life the 10th of July anno 1694 in the 72 year of his age.
Also FRANCES his wife who departed this life the 21st of Febru anno 1706 in the 76th year of her life.
They have had 14 children of which 8 are interred here.
Residence
Ralph and his forefathers are referred to as "of Brerehagh" in
Ducatis Leodiensis1.
Some posit that this is actually a Breare or Breary Hall in West Breary, near Bramhope. I can't find any sign of such a building, but perhaps it was part of the old buildings on Breary Lane that can be seen in
older maps and which today have
this building.
