      There is some disagreement on John's parentage:

      1. Burke1 makes John the son of Henry Scrope, 1st Baron Scrope of Masham (1315-1391) and Joan, grandson of Geoffrey le Scrope and Ivetta Roos and great-grandson of William le Scrope. This same parentage is given in History of Parliament Online and in JW Clay's Extinct and Dormant Peerages.


      2. Foster2 makes John the son of Richard Scrope and Mary Montford. This seems less likely as that puts John in the line of the Scrope Barons of Bolton, rather than the Scrope Barons of Upsall and Masham, which is how John of this page is referred to elsewhere (e.g. see Foster's own Reygate pedigree, Vol. 2, page 109 acr.
