Early Life
Robert Rogers was baptised on the 18 Nov 1571 at
Everton in Nottinghamshire, the son of
Hugh Rogers and
Elizabeth Portington.
Family Life
Roger married
2 Elizabeth Sandford on the 1
st November 1597. They had the following known children:
- George, b. 1598, who married Isabel Pinckney, with issue, and died. 16563. Founder of the Netherthorpe Rogers dynasty4
- Mary, b. 1600, who married John Owtram
- Elizabeth, b. 1601, who married Robert Widdington/Wethington of Hawkesleyin 1628
- Pelusia/Pelatia, b. 1602, who married Christopher Slater of Barlborough
- Portington, b. 1603, no issue
- John, b. 1605
- Hercy, b. 1606, no issue
- Robert, b. 1608, no issue
- Gilbert, 1610
- Debora, 1612
- Abigail, b. ?, who married Ralph Marshall of Thedlethorpe in Lincolnshire
- Ruth, b. 1615 who married Anthony Gilby of Everton in Nottinghamshire
From the will of Elizabeth we identify the following children who were still alive in 1650:
- George
- Ruth, married Anthony Gilby
- ___, married Robert Widdington (probably Elizabeth)
- ___, married Raphe Marshall (Abigail)
- ___, married ___ Slater (Pelatia)
It's possible that the son George is the person for whom there is a marriage record with Elizabeth Newcomb in Nottingham in 1621 (but they had no children, evidently).
Death
There's a burial record for a Robert Rogers, Esq, of Everton, for 3rd January 1636, which feels like it would be the right person, though not 100% confident.
Footnotes
[1] The timing is perfect and Hugh had a number of other children around the same time so I feel this is the correct attribution. In addition, Hunter's South Yorkshire on page 311 (vol. 1) shows a Rogers pedigree also having Robert of this page being the son of Hugh of Everton.
