Known as 'The Bruce', born on 11
th July 1274, probably near Chelmsford in Essex. He was the son of
Robert le Brus, Lord of Annandale and Marjorie, Countess of Carrick (daughter of
Niall MacDhonnchad, 2nd Earl of Carrick).
in 1306, on March 25
th or 27
th , and in defiance of Edward I of England, he assumed the Crown and Royal Dignity of Scotland, ending the
Second Interregnum. Robert I was crowned on the
27 of March 1306 at Scone Abbey in Perthshire.
Family Life
Robert married twice, firstly to
Isabella of Mar, daughter of
Donal, 6th Earl of Mar, by whom he he had
Marjorie who later married
Walter Stewart, 6th High Stewart of Scotland. Isabella died shortly after the birth of Marjorie and Robert did not remarry until 1302, six years later. This second married was to
Elizabeth de Burgh, daughter of
Richard de Burgh, Earl of Ulster, by whom he had 5 children:
- David, born 1324 who succeeded as King of Scots but who had no issue, ending the line of Bruce Kings of Scotland
- John, also born 1325 being twin brother of David but who died as a child
- Matilda, who married Thomas Isaac and died 1353
- Margaret, who married William de Moravia, 5th Earl of Sutherland
- Elizabeth, who married Sir Walter Oliphant of Aberdalgie and Dupplin
Robert also had 6 illegitimate children by unknown mothers.
Death
Robert died on the 7
th of June 1329 at Cardross Castle in Dumbartonshire and was buried in Dunfermline Abbey, Fife.
