Early Life
Probably born c. 1680, currently of unknown parentage.
Career
He is referred to as a "maltman" in some places (e.g. in his testament dative, see below), as well as the fact that he had a brother called
James Mowat who lived in Ruthrieston, and was admitted burgess of Aberdeen on the 2
nd of September 1722 and apparently involved in the Jacobite uprising of 1715.
He married
Christian Mowat, who could have been a cousin. I cannot find any record of their marriage
1 but it must have occurred before 1705. Four children have baptismal records:
- Elizabeth, b.1705
- John, b. 1706
- Margaret, b. 1708
- William, b. 1712, of Colpnay who married Jean Osborn
Death
His testament dative (dated 8
th April 1740), reads as follows:
Inventory of the goods, gear and debts which pertained and was resting and owing on the deceased William Mowat, maltman, in Aberdeen [at] the time of his decease who deceased in the month of ? and years ?
by William Mowat merchant in Aberdeen only lawful son to the said Deceased and Executor Dative ?? nearest of kin ?? by and before the Company of Aberdeen ??
?? of his oath and under ?? ????
knowledge and that he be no further ?? able and secundum ?? inventory and ??
? debts.
In ?? the said Executor with and under the ?? above mentioned gives and grants etc that there pertained and was resting and owing to the said decesased the time of his decease aforesaid the sum of money ?? the sum of one hundred marks ?? [rest is yet to be deciphered]
