See the entry for Katherine's husband
Gilbert Fleming for some discussion on why it's most likely that his wife (the person on this page) was called
Katherine Fane.
Early Life
Online trees suggest that Katherine was a sister of
Henry Fane of Wormsley and so a daughter of
Henry Fane of Brympton and his wife
Anne Scrope. The dates work, as the children of
Henry Fane of Brympton were born around 1700. If Katherine was born too around this time, then she would have been 10 years younger than her husband
Gilbert Fleming.
Henry Fane of Brympton's will (dated 1726) mentions an un-named daughter, married to John Henley, with sons called Thomas, Henry and Francis. But there is no mention of a daughter called Katherine. This might be because she was already dead by 1726 when he wrote the will (as discussed below, Katherine must have died before c. 1732, and could have died before 1726 as her last child was born in 1723). Henry's will also makes it clear that his wife Anne Scrope had predeceased him, but unfortunately I can't find a will for her. I have found a likely baptism for a daughter Mary, (24 Sep 1696) in Bristol, daughter of "Mr Henry Fane" and "Ann"; I think she must be the one who married John Henley. I cannot find any other baptismal records, not even for the known three sons of Henry and Ann, so this doesn't really help to establish whether Katherine was their daughter.
Going further up the tree, Thomas Scrope (Anne's father) died in Bristol 1704 but his will makes no mention of any grand-daughter at all so is not of any help.
The conclusion is that there is only circumstantial evidence that Katherine, wife of
Gilbert Fleming was indeed
Katherine Fane daughter of
Henry Fane of Brympton and so, tempting as it may be, I don't continue her tree upwards to the (annoyingly well-documented) Fane family.
Family Life
Katherine married
Gilbert Fleming, presumably some time around 1717-1718, given that their daughter Katherine was born in 1720 and she was not the eldest daughter.
Death
Katherine must have died before around 1732, which is when her husband Gilbert re-married (to Ann Mathew).
