Early Life
Gabriel Wayne was born on the 10
th of December 1653 in
Chesterfield, Derbyshire, to
Capt. Gabriel Wayne and an unknown mother. By the time he died he had moved to
Conham, near Bristol (
viz his will), and established a new southwestern branch of the Wayne tree. According to Sellers
1 his baptismal record comes from the Register of St Mary and All Saint's Parish Church, in Chesterfield, though I haven't seen the original.
Career
Gabriel appears to have been involved in various inventions relating to mining, including a patent for making pitch and tar.
Family Life
Gabriel may have married twice, according to
Sellers1. We can certainly find the death record of his wife Katherine, dated 1710 (but unfortunately no marriage record, so we don't know her surname). The other marriage, to an Elizabeth Sharpe, is based on an entry in
Burke's Landed Gentry (1852, p. 1223) which mentions that Elizabeth, daughter to William Sharpe and Market Beake, married
Gabriel Wayne Esq. However, I can find no record of this second marriage, outside of the Burke's entry itself. The closest I can get is in 1687, when an Elizabeth Sharpe married a Gabriel Heynes/Hanes at Goudhurst in Kent. I've seen the original entry and it is definitely Hanes, so either Burke mis-stated the surname, or the correct marriage record has not survived.
Sellers states that Gabriel's children were by his first wife, Elizabeth Sharpe, though on what basis I don't know (perhaps because their daughter was called Elizabeth). By the time of Gabriel's will (1721) there is no mention of a wife, which is consistent with Katherine being either the second, or only, wife, and dying in 1710. So for this lack of clarity on who was the mother of this children, I am leaving the entry blank for the time being.
Gabriel had at least three children:
- Elisabeth, born 1695, who married William Clarke or Taylor of Dublin
- John3, born before 1697, of Conham, who married Sarah Baker
- Matthew, born 1697
Death
Gabriel died around 1722 - his will was proved on the 14
th of February that year and mentions:
- His youngest son Matthew Wayne
- His grandson Gabriel Wayne, the eldest son of his eldest son John Wayne
- His grandson John Wayne, other son of his eldest son John Wayne
- His daughter Elizabeth, the wife of Williams Clarke of Dublin2

[2] In the will of John Wayne (Gabriel's son), Elizabeth is said to have married a Mr Taylor of Dublin, not a Mr Clarke
