    • Early Life
      John Wayne was the son of Gabriel Wayne of Conham and an unknown mother. John's siblings were born in the 1690s, and John's own children were born starting 1712, so John cannot have been born much later than the early 1690s. Unfortunately there's no baptismal record that I can find for him. In John's father's will, John is referred to as the eldest son, so he must have been born before Matthew (i.e. before 1697).

      Family Life
      Ancestry trees have John the spouse of Catherine (surname unknown). I think this is an error - as follows:
      The source of the error appears to be "English ancestry of the Wayne family of Pennyslavania" by Edwin Jaquett Sellers. In that document (page 20) John is listed as the son of Gabriel Wain and Elizabeth Sharpe. Gabriel Wain is also noted as having remarried, because there is a burial record for "Katherine, wife of Mr Gabriel Wayne".

      At the very bottom of that page, the entry for John Wayne himself reads:
      John Wayne, son of Gabriel Wayne, and Katherine his wife, was, apparently, of Conham, co. Gloucester.
      Herein the confusion: this entry (in direct conflict with the information given a few lines above where it states that John is the son of Gabriel and Elizabeth Sharpe) suggests that John Wayne was the son of Gabriel and Katherine. But it could also be read, mistakenly, to suggest that John Wayne and his wife Katherine, were of Conham. I think this is the source of the confusion on Ancestry trees which have John being the husband of Catherine.

      We know from John's will that his wife was called Sarah, and that her father was John Baker. Unfortunately there is no record of a marriage between John Wayne and Sarah Baker at the right time. The closest we can get is John Wain marrying Sarah Hitchens in 1707. But this predates the birth of their first child, John, by 5 years, which seems very unlikely (plus the surname is wrong). So most likely is that John Wayne married Sarah Baker around 1711, with no surviving marriage record.

      John and Sarah had at least 10 children (6 boys, 4 girls), but a few may not have survived as they are not mentioned in his will. The known children are:

      10. William, b. 1725


      Death
      John must have died some time after August 1745, when his will was written and November 1749, when it was proved. A John Wayne is noted as having been buried in Bristol on the 27th September 1748, but this John was a Quaker and there is no evidence that the family were Quakers. Another, possibly more likely record, is this one at FamilySearch for a John Wayne who was buried at Bristol, in the parish of St Philip and St Jacob, on the 19th of September 1749. This is sufficiently close to the date of probate that I am happy to view it as a high likelihood.

      John's will was proved in November 1749 in London. In it he mentions his wife Sarah, who has in her own right an estate at Hanham (near Bristol), as well as a 1/3 part in a quarter share of a glass and bottle-making business in St Philip and St Jacob parish, established by her late father John Baker, and Sir Abraham Elton2. He also gave Sarah his two horses, chariot and harness and his house in Bristol. He also mentions

      • His brother Matthew and his sister Elizabeth, married to Mr Taylor of Dublin
      • Thomas Winston (note that John's grand-daughter Elizabeth Wayne married William Hayward Winstone)_

      • Martha Dakins? his wife's servant

      • Imprimis I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Sarah Wayne the sum of £400…+£60/year annuity exclusive of the income of her own Estate at Hanham + £100 to be paid immediately when he dies + all her silver plate, jewels, [?] and household goods which she brought to me when I married her, with all her linen, immediately upon my decease.
      • And as my wife Sarah was before I marryed her concerned and interested one third part of the quarter part which her late father John Baker was interested with the late Sir Abraham Elton [probably the son of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Abraham_Elton,_2nd_Baronet, see also http://www.davenapier.co.uk/mayors/history1.htm] in the making of crown[?] glass and bottles at the glasshouse in Saint Philip and Jacobs parish, I do order and direct that what ever profits or advantages shall arise or arrive from her said part of the profits of the aforesaid glass trade during her life that she my said wife shall receive it for her self and entirely for her own use and after her decease it shall go to my executors.
      • I give to my wife my chariot and harness together with both the horses belonging to it.
      • I give to my wife my house in Tonsole[?] Street In the city of Bristol (which is now let to William Eagle)
      • I give to my son John Wayne £50/year
      • I give to my son Thomas Wayne £300, net of all debts that Thomas owed his father (which is father cancelled).
      • I constitute and appoint my two sons Gabriel Wayne and William Wayne my Executors and bequeath to them all my Real and Personal Estates (except the estate at Hanham, now let to Henry Willis, the reversion of which I purchased sometime since and which belongs to my wife Sarah Wayne) excluding what I gave to my son Gabriel by his marriage articles. Plus all my interest in the copper works and in all the mines both in England and Ireland. But whereas upon a late purchase of a patent obtained for the working of silver mines in the kingdom of Ireland wherein the right part was particularly made to me but on the marriage of my son Gabriel he was entitled to one moiety or half of the said part my same meaning is that the remaining sixteenth part shall be equally divided between my sons Gabriel and William.
      • I do give to Thomas Winston esquire the sum of £10, and to my brother Matthew Wayne £10 and to my sister Elizabeth, wife of Mr Taylor of Dublin, £10.
