• Notes

  The Millenium File (v. unreliable) gives his birth date as 1585, but Findagrave (equally unreliable) gives 1598, with a death in 1675 (aged 77). Some sources (e.g. findagrave, again) have his wife as Helen Cathcart. These may be the result of confusing John's wife with his step-mother: we know that John's father William married Helen Cathcart (with whom he had William Adair of Ayr). For the time being I'm ignoring these completely as they seem largely fabricated and aimed at creating a mythical Lady Cathcart of which I have absolutely no evidence. Note that this "contamination" also goes down in to their descendents, so some trees have John's son Patrick called "Patrick Cathcart Adair"...again, for which I have seen absolutely no primary evidence.
