Early Life
William Stewart was the second son of
John Stewart of
Bute and
Jean Sympil. William's brother James was of age in 1390, so born no later than the late 1360s. One would presume that William was born around the same time (1370-1380), though this means he would have been very old in 1465 when he died (as old as 95, which is very unlikely, though consistent with his apparently long-lived father). Most likely he was born around 1380, when his father (born c. 1355) would have been around 25.
Career
From
The Scot's Peerage1:
William Stewart apparently succeded his brother. He received a charter of the lands of Fennok from his parents on 28 January 1444-5. He was keeper of the Castle of Brodick, in Arran, from 1444 til 1453, when the castle was captured and destroyed by Donald Balloch. His fee for his keepership was in part the ferms of certain lands in the island which were occupied by himself.
He married
Margaret Stewart, who survived him, and was alive on 28 June 1485. They had three sons:
- James
- William, who succeded to the lands of Fennock
- Alexander
Fennock is said to be in the Barony of Renfrew (see the entry for William's father or the original text in the
Scot's Peerage1) but I can't find trace of it now. There is a town called Fenwick in Ayrshire, further south from Renfrew, which might be the same place.
Death
William died c. 1465.
