Early Life
Archibald Stewart was born in 1643 and baptised in
Canongate, Edinburgh on the 28
th or 29
th of February that year. The day itself is hard to distinguish from the baptismal record - transcribers say 28, I read 29. Note that 1644 (in the modern calendar, 1643 in the Julian) was a leap year, so the 29
th of February was possible. He was the fifth son of
James Stewart, 4th Earl of Moray, and
Lady Margaret Home.
The Scots Peerage1 notes this about the Canongate property:
[Archibald's mother Margaret] acquired from her sister by disposition, dated 21 May 1645, to herself and her son James, Lord Doune [Archibald's eldest brother], the house and grounds in the Canongate of Edinburgh which had been built, or rather re-built, by the Countess of Home, and which is now known as Moray House.
The baptismal record also mentions various other nobles, who may have been godparents or witnesses, viz:
- James, Lord Marquis of Hamilton2
- Archibald, Lord Marquis of Argyll3
- ?, Lord Earl of Lauderdale4
- George? Lord Gordon5
- Lord Maitland6
Debrett's Peerage7 mentions Archibald:
In remainder of the Peerages of 1561, 1581 and 1611.
Descendants of the late Charles Stuart, Esq., great-grandson of the late Hon. Archibald Stuart, 3rd son of 4th Earl
Career
Some pedigrees have him as Governor of Stirling Castle though I've yet to see any actual evidence of this outside of a mention in Burke's Landed Gentry.
Family Life
Archibald married
Anna Henderson, daughter of
Sir John Henderson of
Fordell, on the 16
th of March 1669 at
Hamilton, Lanarkshire. NB The marriage record gives her name as "Hendersoune". They had:
- Margaret, b. c. 1669
- Charles, b. c. 1670, first son and heir
- John, b. c. 1672
- Emilia, b. between 1673 and 1680, who married Archibald Nisbet of Carphin
- Anna, b. c. 1674
