Early Life
Born James Sinclair, son of Sir Robert Sinclair of Stevenson and Isabella Kerr, James changed his surname to Lockhart in order to inherit the Cambusnethan property from his uncle, George Lockhart of Castlehill, Lord Woodhall.
It is presumably in honour or memory of James that the name "Lockhart" was given to
Agnes Lockhart Nisbet (his great grand-niece).
The memoirs of
Harry Nisbet1, James' nephew, recount some interactions with the Lockharts:
I was born in the West Indies, November 11th 1794.
Came to England with my mother and her other children after my father’s death in 1799. Went to Scotland in the fall of that year to reside in Clydesdale, Lanarkshire, with my aunt [
Mary Emelia Nisbet] , my father’s sister, the wife of James Lockhart Esq, who had a good estate & residence, called Cambusnethan. Lived with my mother at Dalserf House
2, in that neighbourhood, until the summer of 1803, removing then to Edinburgh where we remained until August 1805, when we went to England, I being then 12 years old.
He later recalls a visit to his cousin Robert Lockhart (son of James) in 1826.
Family Life
James Sinclair Lockhart married Mary Emelia Nisbet on the 17
th of July 1773. They apparently
3 had five children, though I have found baptismal records just for two:
- Robert, born 1774
- Mary Emelia [no baptismal record]
- Isabella [no baptismal record]; died Portobello 1832
- Anne [no baptismal record]; born 1782 and died 1839
- Caroline, born 1790
