Early Life
Richard Gourney was born in 1524 6; his father was Thomas Gurney but his mother's name is not known.
Career
It's not entirely clear if Richard was a Sheriff of London, or an Alderman, or both. Both Wikipedia1 and TRHG4 list him as a sheriff, in 1590 (and a grandson, perhaps, as sheriff in 1634 5 - though Stirnet - and I agree - believes this Richard was entirely unrelated). British History Online2 lists Richard Gurney (senior) as a Sheriff in 1590. Boyd's entry for Richard has:
Cit[izen] Haberdasher; Alderman 1589-1597
Family Life
Richard married Agnes Johnson on the 30 th of March 1563/4 at St Laurence Pountney in London. There is a little bit of confusion about her name:
- Boyd's6 lists her as Anne, daughter of Richard of Hempstead in Essex, b. 1550, died 1 Aug 1612
- TRHG4 lists her as Jane, daughter of Richard of Hempstead in Essex, died in 1612 and buried at St Bryde's church
- The actual marriage record from St Laurence Poutney shows that a Richard Gurney married an Agnes Johnson on the 30th of January 1563/4
- Richard's own will refers to his wife as Anne
I think the names Agnes, Anne and Jane are sufficiently close that these could all be the same person. Wikipedia suggests that Agnes was pronounced 'Annis' in the Middle Ages, so this can explain the Anne/Agnes split. And Jane may have been a misreading of Anne in some original document.
They had nine children:
- Thomas who married Mary Caldwell
- Mary, who married SirHenry Lee
- Anne, who married Richard Edwards
- Jane, who married John Winch
- Joyce?, who married Laurence Wetherall
- Priscilla, who married Richard Collet
- Sybil, who married first Humphrey Wemmes? and secondly Edmund Stapleton
- Bethsheba, who married Israel? Owen
- Frances, who married Hugh Brawn
Death
Richard died in on the 5 of March 1597; TRHG4 states that he was buried at St Michael's in Crooked Lane on the 21st of March 1596, but is probably using the Julian calendar (given that his will is dated October 1596). There is a burial record for Richard Gourney on Ancestry that is incorrectly keyed in as 20 May 1596 but is actually 20 March 1596 (Julian, or 20 March 1597 Gregorian)
Richard's will mentions:
- Wife Anne
- Daughter Bethsheba, wife of Israel? Owen
- Daughter Sybil, wife of Humphrey Wemmes
- Daughter Francis, wife of Hugh
- Daughter Jane, wife of John Wynch
- Son Thomas, daughter Anne and daughter Mary (none of whom were married at the time of his will)
