• Notes

  Early Life Henry Lee was born to Sir Robert Lee and his first wife Joanna Sutton1,3, most likely in about 1575. Occupation Herny was Alderman of London in 16142. Family Life Henry married twice; firstly, to Mary Gourney, on the 17th of October 1597, at St Michael in Crooked Lane, London. In the Visitation of Warwickshire1 it is stated that Mary died in childbirth in 1617 - see her entry for discussion of this. With Mary he had many children, possibly up to 11. Secondly Henry married Thomasine Allotte, the widow of William Quarles. It seems unlikely that they had any children. Death There is a findagrave record (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/126197925) which gives his death as 21 Jan 1620; however, we know that probate was given 14 Feb 1619. So it's likely that the probate date is in the Julian calendar and in the Gregorian calender he died early Jan 1620, was buried on the 21 Jan 1620 and received probate on the 14 Feb 1620. FindMyPast has a Boyd's London Burial record for Sir Henry Lee, at St Lawrence Pountney in 1619. It seems that this is probably not the right person, given that the family is strongly associated with St Andrew Undershaft. Will Henry's will mentions the following people: Dame Thamazine [sic], his (second) wife Eldest daughter Dame Mary Martyn and her husband Sir William Martyn Eldest son and heir, John Son Thomas Daughter Elizabeth Daughter Martha Grand-daughters Mary and Anne Martyn, by his daughter Mary and Sir William Martyn His brother Sir Robert Lee His will is dated Nov 1619, but his burial is listed as occuring in January 1619; this is a Gregorian/Julian mix-up and I have corrected the dates accordingly to make them consistent.
