    • Death
      John Sutherland was described as "late" in the marriage announcement for his daughter Jemima, who married in 1801. In actual fact, he probably died in early 1780, based on the dates of his will and probate.

      His will, dated 8th December 1779 and proved on the 7th of September 1780, starts:

      John Sutherland, Captain in his Majesty's 11th Regiment of Foot, commanded by General William A Court Ashe [sic] and now quartered in the Barracks of Dublin in the Kingdom of Ireland


      Then names his wife Mary Elizabeth nee Williams, and a son from a former marriage, John Barber Sutherland.
