Early Life
Roger Worthingon was born c. 1593 in
Manchester, the son
1 of
Thomas Worthington.
Career
Roger was a linen draper (his burial record describes him as a "wollen [sic] draper").
Family Life
Roger married
Katherine Heywood on the 26
th of February 1612 at
Manchester Cathedral. They had at least possibly nine children, including
John Worthington (b. 1618) who went on to become the Master of Jesus College in Cambridge.
Death
Online pedigrees have Roger dying in August 1649 and buried in Manchester on the 23
rd. Whether this is the right Roger or not is still to be determined, though there clearly is a burial record for a person of this name at that place and time.
Footnotes
[1] There's some confusion in the pedigrees on Roger's parents. Everyone agrees that his father was called Thomas, but in contention is whether this is the Thomas Worthington who married Dorothy ___ (and d. 1670) who is mentioned in Landed Gentry (Worthington of Bryn in the 4th Edition, Worthington of Sandiway Bank in earlier editions), or a different one (e.g.
British Roots of Maryland Families which shows a different Thomas Worthington who married Agnes Gillibrand).
The parentage in Burke's is problematic because it shows Roger's father as dying in 1670. Now, given that Roger was born c. 1593, his father must have been born 1570 or earlier, which means he would have been over 100 when he died in 1670.
There are issues also with the
Maryland pedigree, which itself only shows Roger as a probable son of Thomas and Agnes. If we look at the
Visitation of Lancashire (1613, p126) we find Thomas and Agnes with all their children, but none of them called Roger. Also, if Roger was born 1593 he would have been the eldest son but the
Visitation shows the eldest son and heir as Lawrence.
A footnote
The Diary and Correspondence of Dr John Worthington notes a number of Worthington families:
a) of Blaynsco: described on page 1635 of Landed Gentry 2nd edition (bottom right of page)
b) of Crawshaw (who are the family shown in the 1613 Visitation of Lancashire and who
Maryland Families suggests may be the parentage of Roger) - here described with no mention of Roger as a son; see also p 1636 of Landed Gentry 2nd Edition, here too clearly with no mention of Roger
c) of Shevington - line expired; see Landed Gentry 2nd Edition p1636
d) of Snidehill, connected to the Crawshaw line
e) of Manchester
This latter seems to be the family line for Roger of this page, though the text is confusing. The entry for John Worthington (son of Roger of this page) in the
underlying source for this entry describes him as
son of Roger Worthington aforementioned
implying that the Roger Worthington described a few paragraphs earlier (in the Worthingtons of Manchester section) was the father of John. The best I can interpret, it sounds like Roger Worthington had three sons: John (DD, Master of Jesus), Francis (who had a son also called Francis) and Samuel (who died young). This last entry seems the most convincing, but unfortunately it gives no further pedigree for Roger Worthington of Manchester. A few pages further down in the
Diary we find further confirmations that
John had brothers called Samuel and Francis, so I think this is conclusive.
Finally, I note that the birth year of 1593 is mentioned only in
Maryland and nowhere else so I'm not even sure if it can be reliable (even
Maryland says it can find no baptismal record, so I have no idea where the date comes from). It seems more likely that Roger was born 1591 or earlier so that he was of age when he married in 1612. One possible candidate might be Roger bapt. 1 Feb 1589 at Northenden in Cheshire, son of R.[oger?]. Northenden is a few miles south of Manchester.
