Early Life
John Worthington was born in 1617/8 and baptised at
St Mary, St Denys and St George in Manchester on the 8
th of February 1617/8. His parents were
Roger Worthington, a draper, and
Katherine Heywood; these parents are descrived by the
DNB1 as:
both members of families of the corresponding names in the county palatine of Lancaster, and described as 'persons of chief note and esteem in the town'.
Career
John studied theology at
Cambridge and became a clergyman, taking up a series of positions across Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and in London. From

Family Life
John married
Mary Whichcote, daughter of
Col. Christopher Whichcote (Governor of Windsor Castle) and
Katherine Large, on the 13
th of October 1657. They had five children, two of whom died in infancy; the three surviving to adulthood were:
- Damaris, b. 1661, who married Nathaniel Turner
- John, b. 1663
- Anne
Death
John died on the 26
th of November 1671 in London and was buried in
Hackney on the 30
th; probate on his will was granted on the 1
th of February 1672 at PCC.
