    • The entry reads "William Steer, Hardware Chapman [aka hardware vendor or merchant]". So whilst this doesn't completely conflict with his desciption as a cutler in FMG, it's not perfectly consistent. Secondly, FMG states he was buried in Attercliffe Chapel, whilst this record is for Sheffield Cathedral.

  • Notes
    • Early Life
William Steer was born c. 1652, son of Robert Steer of Edensor in Derbyshire. Ancestry trees give his date of birth as 23 Nov 1651 and his mother as Mary Trippet. However I can't find any record of a William Steer son of Robert and Mary in Edensor. On the other hand, there are records for a George and a Hannah Steer born in 1667 and 1665 respectively at Edensor, to Robert Steer and Anna.

      Career
William was a cutler (a dealer or maker of cutlery). FMG1 notes that he was apprentice to Thomas Trippett of Wadsley for 5 years by indenture, enrolled in 1668. This link with the Trippett name might be instructive in terms of his parentage (see above). In his burial record, William is described as a "Hardware Chapman".

      Family Life
William married Sara Ludlam on the 13th of March 1674 at Sheffield. They had six sons2.

      Death
William died in August 1726 and was buried at St Peter & St Paul in Sheffield, Yorkshire, on the 15th of that month.
