Early Life
Robert Fretwell was probably born around 1700-1705. FMG1 hints that Robert may have been a descendant of a Ralph Fretwell of Brampton in Derbyshire and his wife Mary ___, without showing the relationship in full. Nottinghamshire Archives carries wills for a number of Fretwells in Gringley, including Robert himself (see Death below) and earlier men, including a John Fretwell, yeoman, who died in 1728 and might possibly be Robert's father. The latter may have married an Anne Nichols of Walkeringham (see here).
Family Life
Robert married Bridget Gylby, daughter of Col. William Gylby of Everton in Nottinghamshire and Elizabeth Bluck. The marriage took place on the 4th of June 1726 at East Retford in Nottinghamshire. Robert and Bridget had at least three children:
- William, eldest, and inheritor of part of Sunk Island from his aunt Margaret Gylby (nee Midgley)
- Elizabeth, b. c. 1729, who married the Rev. Charles Steer of Painthorpe in Yorkshire; Elizabeth died 1749 aged just 20, from complications of childbirth
- Robert, b. c. 1730, who married Elizabeth Steer (the sister of Charles Steer); Robert died 1795
Death
Robert died aged 42, at Gringley-on-the-Hill in Nottinghamshire (according to FMG2). Assuming his birth was indeed around 1700 to 1705, he must have died some time between 1742 and 1747.
There were four burials in Gringley during this period, one in 1742, one in 1743, one in 1744 and one in 1746
- Bishop's Transcript: Buried 5 Mar 1742, son of Roger & Sarah Fretwell [suggests this may have been a child]
- Nottinghamshire Burial Index: Buried 4 Mar 1743, at SS Peter & Paul, son of Roger & Sarah [same as above?]
- Bishop's Transcript: Buried 15 Sep 1744, at SS Peter & Paul, noted as Robert junior
- Bishop's Transcript: Buried 14 Jun 1746, at SS Peter & Paul
The most likely seems to be the last one, particularly because the Nottinghamshire Archives holds a will for Robert Fretwell, dated 12th of May 1746 with admon granted 14th November 1749.
