  • Notes
    • Early Life
Whilst there are a number of possible John Darntons born at roughly the same time, I think the most convincing is the one baptised 29th December 1752 in Leeds at the Call Lane Arian Independent Chapel, son of John Darnton. Many subsequent descendents in the Lupton family were baptised in this same chapel. John's burial inscription (see below) confirms his father's name was John.

Looking for other baptismal records at Call Lane in the same period, we find John's eldest sister Mary, baptised 18 May 1738, suggesting that his parents must have married around 1737. That leads us to the marriage of John Darnton and Anne Scurr on the 30th May 1737, providing the trail to John of this page's parents.

So in summary, John Darnton was born in December 1752 and baptised on the 29th of that year at Call Lane Arian Independent Chapel in Leeds, the son of John Darnton and Anne Scurr

      Career
John become an apprentice to a tobacconist (John Cadman, of Leeds) in 1767 and continued in this trade for the rest of his working life.

      Death
John Darnton died on the 11th of March 1835. A memorial flagstone at St John the Evangelist in Leeds reads:
      SACRED TO MEMORY JOHN DARNTON
Son of JOHN & ANN DARNTON
Departed this life 11th March 1835
In the 81st year of his age.
ANN his wife died 14th May 1784
      Aged 36 years.
MARY second daughter of the above
      Died 3rd December 1795
In the 14th year of her age.
