Early Life
John Stigant was born around November 1728 and baptised on the 17
th of that month, the son of
William Stigant and
Sarah Bound.
Family Life
John married
Mary Woodison at
St Mary Portsea on the 11
th of August 1754. They had at least 5 children:
- Mary, b. 1759
- Elizabeth, b. 1761
- John, b. 1764
- Ann, b. 1767 and who married William McPherson Rice (a schoolmaster in the Royal Navy)
- Phillip, b. 1771
Death
John's will references his properties at 35 Gloucester Street and 28 James Street in
Portsea, which he gives to his wife Mary. He also mentions:
- His daughter Elizabeth, spinster
- His son and heir, John, a shipwright
- His son Phillip, a shipwright
- His daughter Mary, the wife of Thomas Brown, a pilot [of ships]
- His granddaughter Mary, the wife of Mark Smith of Weymouth
- His grandson William McPherson Rice
- His grandson William Freeland??
- His son-in-law Thomas Brown
The will in full reads as follows:
John Stigant the elder of the town of Portsea in the county of Southampton, Shipwright…
I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Mary all that my messuage, tenement or dwelling ?? with the outhouses, yard and premises with the appurtenances thereunto belonging, situated, lying and being number 35 on the East side of Gloucester Street in the town of Portsea aforesaid now in the occupation of William Yellard, Carpenter, of his Majesty’s ship Hannibal and also all that my messuage, tenement or dwellinghouses with the said ?? and appurtenances thereunto belonging number 28 and situate lying and being on the east side of James?? Street now in the occupation of James Lang, Shipwright…
…[when Mary dies, the same properties to] my daughter Elisabeth Stigant of Portsea aforesaid, spinster [but if she should marry, then equally to] my son and heir at law John Stigant of the town of Portsea aforesaid, shipwright, my son Philip Stigant of the same town, shipwright, and my daughter Mary ?? the wife of Thomas Brown of the town of Portsea aforesaid, pilot, and my said daughter Elizabeth.
I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter Mary ?? the wife of Mark?? Smith of Wyemouth in the county of Dorset, taylor, the sum of £20; unto my grandson William McPherson Rice the sum of £20 but in case of his death I give and bequeath the same unto my son John Stigant. Unto my grandson William Sterland?? the sum of £5 and unto my granddaughter Ann Freeland?? the sum of £5.
[household goods etc to] unto my said beloved wife Mary.
I appoint my son John Stigant and my son-in-law Thomas Brown executors of this my last will and testament….? Day of June in the year 1810
