Early Life
Mary Webbe was the daughter of
Josiah Webbe of the
New River plantation on the island of Nevis, and an unknown mother. Mary was born around 1723 (based on her age at death, see below).
Family Life
Mary married
Walter Nisbet, also of
Nevis in 1743: at the time she was just 19 years' old whereas Walter was 36. They had five children:
- Walter, b. 1745, who married first Anne Maynard and secondly Anne Parry
- Anne, b. 1746
- Josiah, b. 1747 who married Frances Woolward; after he died she re-married to Lord Horatio Nelson
- James, b. 1749
- Mary Emelie, b. 1752 who married James Sinclair of Cambusnethan
Death
Mary died on the 24
th of January 1752 in Nevis. From
More Monumental Inscriptions1:
Here are the remains of Mary Wife of Coll WALTER NISBET and Daughter of the late JOSIAH WEBBE Esqr of New River who Departed this Life the 24th day of January Ann. Domm. 1752 In the 29th year of her Age.
In the pedigree of Nisbet in
History of Antigua2, she has been incorrectly entered as a daughter of Walter Maynard. In fact, her sister Frances married in 1737
William Maynard and the latter couple inherited the New River estate from Josiah Webbe (the father of Mary of this page, perhaps because he had no male heirs?).
