    • Sydney is a bit of a mystery. We know he existed, because he moved to South Africa with his uncle Charles and aunt Fanny. But we don't know why he did that, rather than stay with his own family. Letters from Charles suggest he was a bit of a layabout, but there's precious little other detail on him. And I've not managed to find any trace of him in any UK census, so he appears to have vanished after his time in Natal.
