  • Notes
    • L_Unknown_02_Burn-Murdoch_Burn-Murdoch talks of two portraits of Elizabeth Mack. The author of the following text is Elizabeth Emma Maud Burn-Murdoch (1858-1933), writing to her sister Annie Jessie:
The portrait [of Elizabeth Mack] was painted by G [sic] Watson Gordon and is now in the possession of her grandson Thomas Henderson (1804-1841), Montreal & is greatly valued. The photo of portrait was done for her eldest grand-daughter Mary Henderson (1862-?) now Mrs P[olly]. Scott 25 Alva St Edinburgh and it was she who gave Dorothy [Bryans] the photo and not I. My copy is only a small carte de visite style.

The second portrait of Aunt Elizabeth was also done by Watson Gordon & I think I like it best, perhaps because I see it so often at P Scott’s house. It came to her through an aunt and we all thoroughly appreciate it. In it, she is wearing a delightfully quaint yellowy bonnet & has pretty lace. Her hands are charming in it; but I believe the green velvet portrait was considered the best.

“Aunt Bessie” was really very beautiful but our mother [was] to have made an even better portrait but evidently funds did not rise to that after grandfather’s death when mother was only 13 years old. As you probably knew, grandmother Mack [Christina Kelly] came to Edinburgh & lived in 23 Stafford Street so as to be near her daughter Elizabeth Henderson at 1 Melville Crescent Edinburgh

It was from her house then that our mother’s marriage took place on 1st July 1850.

I wonder if you know the story of the velvet dress. Aunt Bessie had worn it one evening & left it out on a spare bed when suddenly the house took fire and she was later found out in the street holding her “two precious treasures”: her baby Alexander (1831-1913, a renowned landscape photographer who emigrated to Montreal) & her velvet dress wrapped round him. She of course always said she had mistaken it for a blanket.

Elizabeth married Thomas Henderson, the son of Alexander (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Henderson_of_Press).
