  • Notes
    • D_Burn_2 has Euphemia Elphinstone being the daughter of Michael Elphinstone (b. 1593) of Quarrel, the brother of Alexander, 5th Lord Elphinstone, but this is impossible given the timings required. So...

      Michael Elphinstone (first?) of Quarrell, brother of Alexander 5th Lord Elphinstone, is described in the Scot's Peerage1; unfortunately the reference only mentions Michael's son Robert.

      Some other sources (Ancestry, Stirnet) make Michael (father of Euphemia) the grandson of the Michael from TSP, the intervening generation being Robert Elphinstone of Quarrell. This makes sense as the Michael from TSP died 1640, and Euphemia cannot have been born much before 1652 (i.e. to avoid her being older than her husband David Ramsay).

      One Ancestry tree has her mother Rachel Bruce (of Stenhouse); there is a birth record on Scotland's People (and FamilySearch)for a Robert Elphinstoun born to Michael Elphinstoun and Rachell Bruce on the 6th Feb 1668 at Edinburgh, but nothing for Euphemia.

      https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X1YV-L4L mentions that Robert Elphinstone (perhaps the same as above) had a daughter Margaret who married Sir William Bruce, 3rd of Stenhouse & Airth. There are other sundry references online to Bruces of Airth marrying into the Elphinstone family.

      Finally, in The Lands and Lairds of Larbert & Dunipace Parishes2 we find mention of Euphemia again, but here noted as a sister of Robert and daughter of Michael:
      Michael Elphinstone, third of Quarrell, was a Commissioner of Supply, 1678 and 1685. He and Robert, his eldest lawful son, had sasines "of four oxengate of land of Over Mungall, with the corn milne thereof, kill and milnelands, with ye pertinents," 16th January, 18th February, and 8th July, 1690. He married Rachel Bruce, only daughter of Sir William Bruce of Stenhouse, Bart., by Helen Douglas, his wife, and had 1) Robert, who succeeded; 2) Euphane, eldest daughter, married 30th June 1699 to David Ramsay of Lethendy, WS, who had a sasine of the lands of Over Mungall, milne and milnelands in the barony of Kerse, 26th August 1712. 3) Isobell, born about 1679, died at Edinburgh unmarried, 18th July 1774, aged ninety-five; 4) Mary, third daughter 5) Helen, fourth daughter. Michael Elphinstone of Quarrell died July 1695.

      Piecing all this together, it looks like the succession is:
      Euphemia->Michael, 3rd of Quarrell->Robert, 2nd of Quarrell->Michael, 1st of Quarrel->Alexander, 4th Lord Elphinstone

      Given that Euphemia was the eldest daughter, but younger than Robert, we can narrow down her birth year to between 1669 and 1678,

      Family Life
      Euphemia married David Ramsay on the 30th of June 1699 at Edinburgh: the marriage record reads:
      David Ramsay of Lethanie, Writer to the Signet, & Eupham Elphinston, lawful daughter to the deceast Michael Elphinston of Quarrell.
