  Early Life James Maule was born in 1694 and baptised on the 14th at Panbride. His parents were the Rev. Patrick Maule (minister of Panbride) and Maria Maule. Unlike other entries in the baptismal register in the same period, which have short entries in English, James' record is elaborate and in latin, and reads approximately as follows (it is hard to make out in places): Mr Patricius Maule Ecclesia Balbridensis P[?] filium Jacobum (ex Uxore sua Maria Maule gentium) baptizatum habuit. ?ors ? apat? ? ant Jacobus Maule Comes de Panmure. Pac: Carsgiu? Pastor Barriensis et Jac. Maule ducm? Which I interpret to read: "James, the son of Mr Patrick Maule, minister of Panbride (by his wife Maria Maule, gentlewoman) was baptised. ?Descended from? James Maule of the Earls of Panmure. Witnessed by ?, minister of Barry and James Maule." Family Life James married Jean Strachan, who according to Burke's was the daughter of Capt. John Strachan, somewhat infamous as the leader of a group of Dragoons ("Strachan's Dragoons"). They had at least one daughter, Anne Maule, who married Archibald Murdoch of Cessintully. Career The Murdoch Ancestry in the Family Archive indicates that James was a factor to the Earl of Moray from 1723 to James' death in 1753. Consistent with this is the baptismal record for James' daughter Anne (in 1727), which refers to James as "Gentleman to the Earle of Murray"; this latter must have been James Stuart, 8th Earl of Moray. Intriguingly, this site refers to a "James Maule [who] was factor to James Stuart, the 8th Earl of Moray during 1756". The same reference is found in The Surnames of Scotland. Death The Gartincaber portrait of James is of a man who looks like being in his 50s or 60s (albeit as he is wearing a wig it's a bit hard to tell). If the latter is right, then James' death would have been no earlier than c. 1746. The Murdoch Ancestry pedigree in the Family Archive indicates that James died in 1753. The Scots Magazine, Vol 71 has the following obituary: [March] 31 [1809]. At Drumsheugh [in Edinburgh?], at an advanced age, Mr James Maule, factor for the Earl of Moray, a situation which he held for 55 years This James Maule would have started his service in 1754. However, if this is the same person as the subject of this entry, then he would have been well over 100 years old when he died, which seems unlikely. Perhaps James Maule senior (the subject of this page) had a son, also called James, who continued in his father's footsteps as factor to the Earl of Moray in 1754, after the death of his father in 1753? As it is, I have not yet found definitive evidence that James died in 1753, but it seems the most likely date. Old research I developed the following research prior to my breakthrough find of a baptismal record for James, summarised above. The identity of James Maule is unclear. The oldest edition of Burke's Landed Gentry, from 1849, says this: ...James Maule was engaged in the rising of '15 and fought at Sheriffmuir. He was the author of Travels on the Continent made in company with the Chevalier St George [This was James Stuart, son of James II] and the Earl of Panmure [James Maule, 1658-1723], and he wrote also a genealogy of the Maules, both of which are extant. Unfortunately they are not extant any longer, as I can't find any trace of them. James Maule is referred to in later editions (e.g 1898) as follows: ... a descendant of the noble family of Panmure, who enagaged in the rising of 1715, and fought at Sheriffmuir; he was author of Travels on the Continent and A Genealogy of the Maules . More recent versions (e.g. 1965) confuse him with his son-in-law Archibald Murdoch as relates to these authorships (i.e. they state incorrectly that Archibald Murdoch was the author, rather than James Maule). This idea that James Maule was involved in the Jacobite rising and travelled to France is echoed in L_1898_06_Burn-Murdoch-Bryans, where John Burn-Murdoch (1821-1908) describes the famous Gartincaber tree grove (which was planted in a French style, in commemoration of the birth of Archibald Murdoch, James Maule's grandson) and mentions that: Mr Maule [i.e. James Maule] ... had spent 3 years in France - after the 1713-1716 [uprising?] and had travelled much in the country during that time." Other family archive documents (D_Maule (Burn-Murdoch Scrapbook) and D_Murdoch (Burn-Murdoch Scrapbook)) directly indicate that James Maule was the son of Harry Maule, brother of the 4th Earl Panmure. I don't trust these as whilst Harry did indeed have a son called James, that son died in 1729 and was apparently unmarried. However, there is a small sign that perhaps a connection at least to the Panmure family, if not to Harry Maule himself may be true: at Gartincaber there was a copy of a manuscript relating to travels of a James Maule and the Earl of Panmure. That specific document being: Journey from Dundee to Avignon in Company with the Earl of Panmure & Doctor Blair etc. begun the 1st of February 1716, by James Maule This is the document referred to in O_Maule_Journal. It appears to precede a second document "Journal by Doctor Blair from Avignon to Pesaro...with the Earl of Panmure etc begun ye 8 February 1717" which is referenced here. Another possibly relevant work is "Journal of a Journey made by the Earle of Panmure and James Maule, son of Mr Harie Maule of Kellie, from Paris to Maule, October 1720". This is found in Appendix III of the Registrum de Panmure. The baptismal record of James' daughter Anne in 1727, refers to James as "Gentleman to the Earle of Murray"; this latter must have been James Stuart, 8th Earl of Moray. Intriguingly, this site refers to a "James Maule [who] was factor to James Stuart, the 8th Earl of Moray during 1756". See the note below on potential death dates for more on this. Also note that the Earls of Moray are direct ancestors further back in time (see the Nisbet line). Sweden? A certain James Maule married Lona Busck in Sweden in the early/mid 1700s. This is interesting because Lona was the grand-daughter of Hans Hansson Busck, who is a direct ancestor on a different line. This James Maule was the son of John Maule of Glithno and claimed descent from the Earls of Panmure. In conclusion James Maule was probably born around 1700 but no later than 1706 and probably died no sooner that 1756, meaning he would have been no younger than his mid-50s, consistent with the portrait. There's a very small possibility he survived past 100 and died in 1809 and is thus the factor to the Earl of Murray referred to in some places; based on some (only just) realistic age assumptions this means he would have been born in 1706 and lived until he was 103. James Maule was probably not the son of Harry Maule, as that son died unmarried in 1729 James Maule may have worked for the 8th Earl of Moray and thus would have been of relatively good family; most likely a cadet branch of the Earls of Panmure This James Maule may have been the author of one or more works: a) "Journey from Dundee to Avignon in Company with the Earl of Panmure & Doctor Blair etc. begun the 1st of February 1716, by James Maule" b) "Journal of a Journey made by the Earle of Panmure and James Maule, son of Mr Harie Maule of Kellie, from Paris to Maule, October 1720"; c) "Travels on the Continent" (if this is actually a different book and not a sub-title for one of the previous two works); d) "A Genealogy of the Maules"
