Early Life
All Ancestry trees have
John Lonsdale as the son of John Lonsdale and Deborah Whittingdale, but I have no idea where this comes from. Instead, I follow the
History & Antiquities of Masham1 which gives a different pedigree. Here, John is given as the son of
John Lonsdale of
Masham (Yorkshire), gentleman, and
Mary Beckwith, born in 1738 and baptised at Masham on the 22
nd February that year. This date is supported by a baptismal record for a John Lonsdale, son of John Lonsdale, in
FMP which gives his baptism as 22 Feb 1737 (Julian), which would be 1738 Gregorian. Be aware that the
Cambridge Alumni record for John has his baptism as 22 Feb 1739, so must have applied a second Julian->Gregorian conversion to a date that was already Gregorian.
Career
John became a priest and ultimately served as the vicar of
Darfield in the West Riding of Yorkshire (now part of South Yorkshire).

- Mary, born 1793
