Early Life
Michael Turner was born on the 29
th of September 1772 and baptised on the 26
th of October that year at
St John-at-Hampstead in London. His parents were
John Turner and
Eleanor Griffith.
L_1946_Turner_Bryans1 speaks of the older ancestry of the
Turners, with a link back to William the Conqueror and Duncan I of Scotland. I have not found these two connections, but they almost certainly exist; via the
FitzWilliam ancestors it is possible to get back to Charlemagne.
Family Life
Michael married
Mary Elizabeth Fülling, daughter of the naturalised Prussian immigrant
Thomas Fülling (originally from
Hanover), on the 27
th of October 1795 at
St George Hanover Square in London. Mary was only 18 at the time of marriage (and hence too young to marry without the permission of her father). Consequently, the marriage licence reads:
Appeared personally Michael Turner Esquire, and made Oath that he is of the Parish of Saint Dunstan in the West, London, Bachelor aged twenty-one years and upwards and intendeth to intermarry with Mary Elizabeth Fülling of the parish of Saint George Hanover Square in the County of Middlesex, Spinster, and eighteen years and upwards & a minor by and with the consent of Mary Fülling of the same parish, widow, the natural and lawful mother of the said minor.
Then appeared personally the said Mary Fülling, widow, and made oath that the said Mary Elizabeth Fülling the bride aforesaid hath not any father, ?? or any Testamentary or other guardian appointed to her and that she the aforesaid is her natural and lawful mother and is consenting to the above intended marriage.
Michael and Mary had 17(!) children:
