Early Life
Marylandia was born on the 6
th of September 1716, the daughter of
John Hart, former Governor of Maryland, and
Mary Hart (or possibly Anne Hart - see her entry for more discussion). See also the first footnote for clarification on some other theories about her parents.
Family Life
Marylandia married
Robert Parry on the 10
th of August 1745 at Warfield in Berkshire. They had six children:
- Robert
- Jane
- Paul
- Thomas
- Edward
- Anne, born 1752, who married Walter Nisbet of Nevis in the West Indies
Death
Marylandia died c. 1780; her will (dated 22 October 1774 with a codicil from the 2
nd of March 1780) was proved on the 8
th of March 1780. In it she gives:
- A bond of £1000 to her son Richard Parry
- All her plate to her son
- £500 to her son Edward Parry
- A bond of c. £500 to her son Paul Parry
- £1000 and the residue of her Estate to her daughters Jane and Anne Parry equally divided between them
- In a codicil dated 2 March 1780 she directs her daughters to pay £100 each to the three daughters of her eldest son (Robert?), named Mary, Jane and Ann respectively
Anne and Jane were also executors of the will.
Footnotes
[1] There is some confusion in the written pedigrees on whether Marylandia was Marylandia
Hart-Cotton, the daughter of Thomas Hart and Jane Cotton (e.g. see
The National Library of Wales Journal) or whether she was Marylandia
Hart, the daughter of John Hart, the 12
th Governor of Maryland. However, it is clear that the available evidence is in favour of the latter: firstly, she was obviously named directly after the state of Maryland and we have birth and baptismal records from the State of Maryland, in 1716, for a Marylandia Hart, where her parents are given as John and Anne (rather than Thomas and Jane). One wrinkle is that there is a
Findagrave record saying that a Marylandia Hart, daughter of Governor Hart, was buried in September 1716 in Annapolis. Maybe this is a mis-key and it should be classified as a birth, rather than a burial? I don't put too much weight on the reliability of Findagrave. Most convincingly, John Hart's will explicitly makes bequests to his daughter Marylandia (he calls her "Marylanda" in that document). Finally, Burke's Family Records for the Parry family clearly state that Robert Parry married "Marylandia, daughter of Thomas Hart, of Warfield, Berks, Governor of Marlyand
temp Queen Anne". So I think it is clear beyond all doubt that Marylandia's father was John Hart. For some discussion on who her mother was (it is not clear if her mother was Anne Hart or Mary Hart, see her
mother's entry).
