      He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn on 12 February 1774.1 He was an Advocate on 30 July 1774. He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1779 entitled to practice as a Barrister-at-Law.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Anstruther-Easter Burghs between 1783 and 1790.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Cockermouth between 1790 and 1796.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Anstruther-Easter Burghs between 1796 and 1796.1 He held the office of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Bengal between 1796 and 1806.1 He was invested as a Knight on 4 October 1797.1 He was created 1st Baronet Anstruther, of Fort William, Bengal [Great Britain] on 18 May 1798.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Anstruther-Easter Burghs between 1806 and 1811.1 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 19 November 1806.1 He succeeded to the title of 4th Baronet Anstruther, of Anstruther and of Elie House, co.
