  • Notes
    • Early Life
James Haultain was born in October 1698, son of Theodore Haultain (possibly a French Huguenot immigrant to England) and Mary Leigh. According to the Merton Historical Society1:
The Haltains [sic] were French Protestants and several members of the family are interred at Mount Nod, the old Huguenot burial ground on East Hill, Wandsworth. The name was recorded in England as early as 1569, for an entry of January that year in the Lansdowne manuscript included one Adrian Haultain amongst "les noms de ceux qui sont rangez de eglize francoize, natifzez pais du Roy Philippe".

This unsourced entry at Rootsweb gives James' date of birth as 11 October 1698, which I'll use but with caution.

      Career
In 1717 James (aged 19) was identured as an apprentice to William Kingston. James subsequently ran a calico printer business "Haultain et Cie", which employed up to 49 men at their Mitcham works in 17141. Apparently James' father (Theodore) was one of those who petitioned Parliament in 1714 against the Act "Prohibiting the Use of all Printed, Painted and Dyed Calicoes".

      Family Life
James married Martha Wells, daughter of Benjamin Wells, in 1739. Rootsweb2 gives the precise date as 14 Aug 1739, though without source (though the date seems reasonable given the baptism of their eldest child Theodore in June 1740). They had seven children:
      1. Theodore, bapt. 1740 and who married Sarah Stert; he died 1806
      2. Benjamin, bapt. 1741 and who died 1790
      3. Mary, bapt. 1742 and who married William Porter of Surrey; Mary died 1785
      4. James, bapt 1744 and died 1790
      5. William, bapt. 1746 and who died a few days after his baptism
      6. Charles and Francis, twins, bapt. 1747; Charles died 1761 and Francis died 1827
