Footnotes
[1] We know that
William Porter was at least 21 in 1767 when he married
Mary Haultain, so he must have been born before 1746. The
Registers of Banstead2 has him aged 63 when he died in 1797, making his year of birth c. 1734. Unfortunately the trail then runs dry as William Porter was a relatively common name and, with no other information to hand, it's impossible to say which candidate is the right one. For possible future research, the top candidates include:
- Wm bapt 18 Jul 1733 at Kingston, to Ralph and Susan [Shaw?]
- William bapt. 14 Aug 1735 at Cobham, to Robert and Elizabeth [Sutton?]
