Thomas Cox als Hayward was born around 1601
1., the son of
Thomas Cox als Hayward of
Forthampton, Gloucestershire.
I believe it was his son William who purchased the estate of
Quedgeley (the manor house was then known as
Woolstrop House).
There is a
grant of arms to a Thomas Hayward als Cox, of Forthampton, dated 26 May 1666. This can't be Thomas Cox als Hayward senior, who died in 1626, so I conclude that it was to this Thomas Cox als Hayward. The conclusion is confirmed by the
Visitation of Gloucester2.
Family Life
Thomas married
Susan Shayle, the daughter of
John Shayle of
Dymock, gent. She was 18 years his junior; they probably married around 1646 and had:
- William, b. 1647, who married Eleanor Rogers of the Rogers of Dowdeswell family
- Elizabeth, b. 1649, who married Lodowick Packer of Cheltenham and who died aged just 34
- Phillip, b. 1652, who married Mary Sturmey
- Mary, who married John Sturmy of Swindon
Death
Thomas died in 1668, aged 67.
This is his will, which mentions:
- Wife Shusanna (Susan)
- Son Phillip
- Daughter Elizabeth Packer
- Daughter Mary Sturmey
- Son William
- Witness Thomas Shoyle
Thomas Shoyle would most likely have been either his father-in-law or brother-in-law.
