  • Notes
    • Early Life
Albinia Frances Hayward was born in 1773 and baptised on the 29th of July 1773 at Bristol; she was the daughter of William Hayward Winstone1 of Quedgeley in Gloucestershire, and his wife Elizabeth Wayne.

      Family Life
Albinia married the Rev. John Adey Curtis on the 23rd of May 1761 at St Swithins, Walcot near Bath. John died just 13 years after they married, in 1812. In 1818, Albinia adopted the surname Curtis-Hayward in response to a request in the will of her father William and her children adopted the same double-barrelled surname.

      Death
Albinia died on the 19th of May 1860 aged 87 and was buried at Quedgeley.

      Hayward Surname
      From Patronymica Brittanica:
Fr. haie, a hedge, and ward, O. Eng. a guardian or keeper. Inclosures as well as the fences which encircled them were called hays; hence a Hayward was a person employed to watch enclosed fields.
"I have an home and be a Hayward
      And liggen out a nyghtes,
And kepe my corn and my croft
      From pykers and theves."
      Piers Plowman.

Jacob defines it as "one that keeps the common herd of cattle of a town;" and adds: "the reason of his being called a hayward may be because one part of his office is to see that they neither break nor crop the hedges of enclosed grounds, or for that he keeps the grass from hurt and destruction. He is an officer appointed in the lord's court for the due execution of his office." Law Dict, in voc.

      Footnotes
[1] William Hayward Winstone was born William Hayward, but adopted the surname Winstone on receiving an inheritance from his uncle, Thomas Winstone of Stapleton.
