      Which James Burn?
There is a memorial inscription2 at Dollar Churchyard:
JAMES BURN of Gateside 13.10.1750 68, wife KATHARINE MAYNE 24.5.1781 83, by eldest son James DD of this parish and many years senior clergyman at Calleulla died at New Norfolk St London 24.7.1794 67

This son James has a will at the PCC, probate 1st September 1794. The dates for Katharine are slightly problematic as they indicate she died in 1781, rather than 1739 as proposed by Burke's Landed Gentry1. And the date of death for James is 1750, rather than 1751 as given by Burke (though this is close enough to not matter). Could it be that two James Burns existed at roughly the same time and both married a Katherine Mayne, or did Burke get confused? I note that there are two records for the marriage of a James Burn and Catherine Main: 1) on the 3rd March 1705 at Alloa and 2) on the 28 Jul 1714 at Alloa. I think that the memorial inscription above is for the second couple who though they have exactly the same names, are not the correct people for this tree.
