Early Life
There's a record for a John Kelso born to Robert Kelso and Janet McAlester in Polmont in 1734, but nothing for a son of Robert and Jane Oakley.
So the only evidence we have that
John Kelso was the son of
Robert Kelso is
Burke's1 and the
History of the County of Ayr3.
Career
Burke's1 lists John as Captain in the 32
nd Regiment of Foot. The baptismal record for John's son Robert notes that John was 'of General Leighton's Regiment', a confirmation of his career in the
32nd.
He inherited the estate in Dankeith by entail when his cousin (sister of William Kelso) died.
Family Life
John married
Margaret Mowat, daughter of
William Mowat of
Colpnay and
Jean Osborn on the 13
th of June 1758.
Regarding his children: there are quite a few entries for Kelsey children born to John Kelsey [sic] and Margaret Mowat and baptised at St Nicholas in Aberdeen. We take these to be the correct family, together with further children (surname now Kelso) born to John Kelso (but no mother's name given) in
Symington, Ayrshire (where John and Margaret eventually were buried, see later). According to
Burke's and
History of Ayrshire3 John and Margaret had 14 children, though I have only found convincing records for ten of them:
- William, b. 1759
- Robert, b. 1761 and who married Marianne Susan Burtsal
- John, b. 1762, died young
- Millar, b. 1763
- Stuart, b. 1765
- Francis, b. 1769
- Archibald, b. 1771
- Mary, b. 1772
- George, b. 1773
- Margaret, b. 1774
- Berrie, Andrew, Jane and Charlotte Christina, for whom I have found no records
The main surviving Kelso lines seem to be through either
William or
Robert. Many of the male children moved to India and at least two (
Archibald and
George) married there.

[2] The writing is unclear but does indeed seem to say 52, rather than 32 (in contradiction with the entry in Burke's)
