    • Early Life
      Thomas' burial record gives his year of birth of c. 1755. We have a Thomas Pattinson born 29th Jun 1754 in Alston, son of Thomas. This strikes me as the most likely record, though Ancestry trees have him son of William Pattinson (1730-1783) and Isabel Watson (1736-?), but with no documentary sources so I'm going to ignore those. He does not appear to have been baptised as a Quaker, so must have converted later in life.

      Career
      In obituaries for his son Hugh Lee Pattinson, Thomas is listed as a shopkeeper/grocer. However, in Thomas' marriage licence his occupation is given as miner.

      Family Life
      Thomas married Margaret Cooper (nee Lee, a widow) by licence at Durham in 1785. They had possibly three children:

      1. Mary, b. 1788 (but christened at Carlisle, so possibly not a daughter)
      2. Thomas, b. 1790 in Alston
      3. Hugh Lee, b. 1796 in Alston and who married Phoebe Walton

        From The Worthies of Cumberland1:
        They [Margaret and Thomas] were respected members of a self-denying religious body. The father showed industry and thrift; the mother was a capital instance of the old school of matronly Quakers, thoughtful, good-tempered, kindly in manner, and full of neighbourly offices.


        Death
        Thomas died on the 19th of May 1812 at Alston and was buried there on the 21st. His death duties (he died intestate) were registered at Durham.
