Early Life
William Burtsal was 'of Ludham' in his marriage record, whereas
Frances his spouse was "of Bungay".
Ludham is a village in Norfolk, quite a way away from Bungay. His banns were read at
Norwhich St Stephen, supporting his place of abode as Ludham near Norwich. There is no trace of a baptismal record in Norfolk or Suffolk during a suitable time range (1680-1700).
Career
Possibly a school-teacher in
Bungay (see this
fleeting reference1). Perhaps he was a school teacher in Norwich before he married?
Family Life
William married
Frances Nelson (daughter of
Richard Nelson of Bungay) on the 29
th of April 1716 at
St Stephen in Norwich. This is interesting as usually couples married at the bride's parish church. I can find no baptismal records following this date for nearly 20 years, until in 1735 when their son
Nelson Burtsal was baptised. There must have been other children, and one possible candidate is a Rebecca Burtsell (sic) whose marriage to John Long on the 10 Dec 1761 (a few years before Nelson Burstal married, in 1770) is recorded at Bungay Holy Trinity. William's
entry at FamilySearch notes 7 children, with William being the last (and Rebecca being the fourth).
Death
There are burial records for two William Burtsalls in Bungay that might possibly be this William:
1) Buried 13 Jul 1737 at Bungay St Mary; this corresponds to a death date of 11 Jul 1737 given at
FamilySearch and also to the date used by S. Hunter in William's profile at Wikitree which she says was a transcription of a gravestone.
2) Buried 7 Jul 1738 at Bungay St Mary
Either of these, if correct, mean that William died soon after the birth of his son Nelson in 1735. However, given that William married Frances Nelson in 1716, there's a span of 20 years to account for from that marriage date to the birth of Nelson, without any apparent other children born in the intervening period.
