Career
See
here for land tax records indicating that William held
Brae of Cessintully,
Gartincaber and "Part of Lord Napier's Land" in 1802.
Family Life
William married
Sarah "Sally" Campbell Murdoch in 1801. Apparently she was his housekeeper and the wedding was a bit of a scandal; notwithstanding the same surname, it's likely that William and Sarah were distant cousins at best. William is believed
1 to descend from a branch of the Murdoch family in
Cumloden, Galloway which established itself at Gartincaber House in Perthshire in the mid-1600s. We know that there was a Murdoch family in Doune who were pistol makers in the mid/late 1700s; whether this was William's side or Sarah's side is not clear. Family documents
2 indicate that Sarah was from the "Bridge of Teith"
Murdoch family.
William and Sarah had six children:
- Archibald, born 1747 and who drowned in 1774 whilst crossing to the Isle of Mull3
- James
- William, born 1757
- Jean
- Margaret
- Anne Maule, who married John Burn and from whom descend the modern-day Burn-Murdochs
Apparently William, believing that he lived in the exact center of Scotland, built a folly - a two-storey octagon tower - on the family land in 1799
1.
Death
William died in 1805.
