Early Life
Charles Liddell was born c. November 1701 and baptised on the 10th of November 1701, at
Gateshead, County Durham, son of
Samuel Liddle and
Ruth Atkinson1.
Career
A 1750
document at the National Archives indicates that Charles was a mariner. This is
confirmed again in 1755. The
Register of Freemen of Newcastle upon Tyne1 lists Charles as a son of Samuel Liddle, 'master mariner', having been made a freeman on the 15
th of January 1721 (when he was about 19). A link with the sea also explains why Charles' daughter Ruth married a Royal Navy surgeon from Somerset.
Family Life
It appears that Charles and Joan had:
- Mary, b. 1729
- Samuel, b. 1731
- Margaret, b. 1734
- Ruth, b. 1735 and who married John Bullen of Somerset
Death
The date of death of 15th November 1779 comes from
D_Unknown_Bullen but I haven't found a matching burial record. The closest I get is 17th November 1780 for Charles "Liddle", of Lowlights, buried at Tynemouth. I think these must be the same person and that the date of 1779 is an error.
Footnotes
[1] We arrive at Charles' parents as follows:
a) He must have been born c. 1700 given his marriage to Joan in 1728
b) There is a baptismal record for a Charles Liddle on 10 Nov 1701, at Gateshead, son of Samuel Liddle
c) There is a marriage record for a Samuel Liddle and a Ruth Atkinson, date 20 May 1697, at St Mary in Gatehead
d) Charles called his daughter Ruth
e) The
Royal Naval Biography of Charles Bullen (grandson of Charles Liddle) mentions that his mother Ruth, the daughter of Charles of this page, was a second cousin of Lord Eldon (John Scot)
f) John Scot's parents were William Scot and Jane Atkinson, daughter of Henry Atkinson
g) If Henry Atkinson was the brother of Ruth Atkinson (the proposed mother of Charles Liddle of this page) then that would make Ruth Liddle and Lord Eldon second cousins, as claimed
h) Charles' daughter Ruth married John Bullen, of the Royal Navy; Charles himself, and his father, were mariners
i) All this being said, note that online trees suggest Charles' father was also called Charles, but I can find no records to back this up.
