    • Early Life
      Ruth Liddell was born on the 11th of July 1735 to Charles Liddell and Joan Welford1; Ruth was baptised in Gateshead in County Durham on the 25th of July. Several sources2,3 suggest that she was was the second cousin of Lord Eldon: the link is through her paternal grandmother Ruth Atkinson, who was the sister of Lord Eldon's maternal grandfather, Henry Atkinson.

      Family Life
      Ruth married John Bullen, a physician in the Royal Navy, at Christ Church in Tynemouth on the 14th February 1767 (St Valentine's Day, though I'm not sure if this was celebrated in 1767). They had three children:
      1. John, born 1767 but who died as an infant
      2. Charles, later Vice Admiral, born 1768 and who married Eleanor Wood (apparently a cousin of his)
      3. Richard, later Captain, born 1779 and who married Jemima Foster Sutherland

      Death
      Ruth Liddell died in 1818 and was buried on the 3rd of April in Havant, Hampshire.

      [1] We infer Ruth's mother's name as follows:
      a) The family document Bullen Pedigree states that Ruth's father Charles married a "Joan ?"
      b) There was a marriage between a Charles Liddell and a Joan Welford on 26 Nov 1728 at St Mary, Gateshead, which timing and location is consistent with the birth of their daughter Ruth in 1735, also in Gateshead.
      [2] The Three Dorset Captains at Trafalgar, page 246: "His mother [i.e Ruth] was a native of Newcastle-on-Tyne, being the daughter of Charles Liddell and a cousin of the great Lord Chancellor Eldon..."
      [3] Royal Naval Biography of Charles Bullen (Ruth's son): "Ruth, daughter of Charles Liddell, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Esq., and second cousin of the present Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. The Earl of Eldon’s mother and Captain Bullen’s grandmother were first cousins." This appears to be slightly wrong: in fact Lord Eldon's mother and Captain Bullen's grandfather were first cousins.
