      John Bullen was born on the 27th of January 1744 at Seavington, Somerset; his parents were Richard Bullen, a farmer, and Elizabeth ___.

      Career
      John was Surgeon-General of the naval force employed on the coast of America, under Vice-Admiral Arbuthnot, in 1779, 1780, and 1781.

      He is referred to as John Bullen "of Weymouth" in the 3 Dorset Captains.

      Family Life
      John married Ruth Liddell, the daughter of Charles Liddell of Newcastle and Joan Welford, on the 14th of February 1767 at Christ Church, Tynemouth in Northumberland. They had:
      1. John, b. 1767 but who died a year later
      2. Charles, b. 1768 and later a Vice Admiral in the Royal Navy, who married Eleanor Wood
      3. Richard, b. 1779 and who married Jemima Foster Sutherland in 1801

      John died around 1791 aged just 47; at the time he was living, with his wife Ruth and children Charles and Richard, near his parents, at Seavington Abbott, a tything of Seavington St Mary.
