    • Early Life
      Richard Bullen was born on the 8th of February 1779 in Tynemouth, Newcastle, the third son of John Bullen, a navy physician, and Ruth Liddell. Richard attended Wadham College, Oxford (matriculated 8th April 17961) and got his BA in 1800.

      Career
      Richard was in the 2nd Dragoon Guards (also known as the Royal Scotch Greys) and was eventually promoted to captain.

      Family Life
      Richard married Jemima Foster Sutherland, the daughter of Capt. John Sutherland of the 11th Regiment of Foot, on the 8th of October 1801 at Newport, Hampshire. At the time of his marriage application he was noted as being a lieutenant, of St Mary's Taunton, Somerset. They had the following children:
      1. Emma Frances, b. 1802
      2. Charlotte Laura, b. 1804
      3. Charles John, b. 1806 and died aged 19
      4. Richard Edward, b. 1809 and who married Susannah Paine with issue
      5. George Shipley, b. 1811 but who died in 1812
      6. Constance, b. 1814 and who married Lt Col Hugh Mitchell of the Royal Marines
      7. Jemima Cecelia, date of birth not known


      Death
      Richard died very young, aged just 35, in Hythe in September 1814, which is the location for the Royal Military Canal that was built starting in 1804 and completed in 1809 (but that may just be a coincidence). Also, 1814 was the same year that his youngest daughter Constance was born - she was born on the Isle of Wight in October, whereas Richard died in Kent in September so never met his youngest child. The question is, what was he doing in Hythe (unless perhaps Hythe was the registration office for deaths in the Isle of Wight?).
